What I do not do

What I do not do

Faith is optional here. This is what you can count on me not to do with it, or with anything else.

  • I do not use scripture as a promise

A passage may help you, and you may bring one. I will not hold one up as a promise that things will turn out a certain way.

  • I do not tell you what to believe

I do not argue you toward faith or away from it, and I do not judge where you are today.

  • I do not pray unless you ask

Many clients never do. If you want a short prayer, I will join you, and if you do not, we carry on.

  • I do not stand in for your pastor

I am a counselor, not clergy. I can name spiritual directors and pastors if you want one.

  • I do not give medical advice or prescribe

A physician or psychiatrist handles medication. I can help you work out what to ask.

  • I do not promise results or a number of sessions

We set the pace together, and you can stop at any time.

Why list it

People who have been hurt in church, or who love it and fear being told what to think, often ask first what a faith-friendly counselor will not do. So it is written here, before you write to me.

If something on this list ever happens in a session, tell me. I would rather know.

Questions about any of this?

A 15-minute call is a way to ask them. It is not therapy, an evaluation or an assessment.
