Questions

What nearly everyone asks

Do you take my insurance?

No. Spirit Counseling is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay for each session yourself. I give you an itemized receipt in case your plan reimburses part of it. I do not take Medicare or Medicaid, and I will gladly name colleagues who do.

What is the receipt I can send my plan?

It is called a superbill, and your plan may reimburse part of out-of-network care when you send it, though your plan decides whether it pays anything. I give you one each month, with the dates and kind of session. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. I give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

How do fees work?

You pay at the end of each session by card. I give your fee in writing before we start, and the fees page explains the receipt, the estimate and the cancellation notice.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes. Most health savings and flexible spending cards work for counseling. Check with your plan administrator if you are unsure.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 60 minutes. I explain how I work, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of counseling, and I listen. At the end we each decide whether to continue.

Does faith have to be part of it?

No. Faith is optional here, and you can change your mind at any point. Some people want prayer or a passage in the room; many want neither. I follow your lead.

How often, and for how long?

Sessions run 50 minutes, or 80 for couples. We set the pace together and I do not promise a number of sessions.

Are you licensed where I live?

I am licensed in Colorado, and my license is listed at the foot of every page. By video I see people who are in Colorado during the session. If you are elsewhere, I will help you find someone licensed there.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This site and my messages are not monitored around the clock.

What is confidential, and what are the limits?

What you share stays in the session. The law sets limits: if someone is at serious risk of harming themselves or another person, or if abuse of a child or an older adult is suspected, I may have to tell others. I explain this in writing before you start.

Can you see my teenager?

I see adults and couples. For a teenager, I will give you the names of colleagues who work with teens and explain how consent works in Colorado.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment. Your written estimate states what happens if that is not possible.
